audio problems

Several people seem to have asked this same question and I see noi satisfactory answers.  The speakers on my Toshiba laptop will start OK (with the windows startup sounds) and then work with applications for a little while, perhaps five minutes, and then stop.  The only drivers are windows drivers, there are no Toshiba drivers listed, and an Intel display sound driver.  Uninstalling and letting the system find the speakers again just restarts the problem as described.  All of the obvious solutions that have been posted are pretty useless.  Nothing, including a driver check, shows any problems.
